‘Darlington Jobs for the Future’ and Bradford University School of Engineering held an event at QE 6th Form College inviting Darlington schools to bring teams of Y9 and 10 students to a competition to design and build a Hovercraft. Hurworth took two teams of Year 9 students.
The event was part of a STEM initiative to help students understand the benefits of careers in Engineering and the importance of STEM subjects both at school and in further education.
Hurworth took two teams of Y9 students who were up against Y10 students from other schools. They were given their task and set away with the design of their Hovercraft. The dimensions and proportion of the Hovercraft had to be carefully calculated to take into account the size of the pilot as well as other design constraints such as the size of the ‘engine’ (a leaf blower).
The Hovercrafts were decorated and our students chose themes of ‘Under the Sea and an Disney’s ‘Up’. Teams raced against other schools and a winner was picked based on performance and design.
One Hurworth team managed to finish third with was a magnificent achievement considering many other teams were Year 10.
QE staff and delegated from Bradford University’s School of Engineering praised our students efforts and talent in the design and build task.
