The Year 9 football team made the longest trip possible last Thursday night, Hurworth – the most southerly team in the Durham County Cup were drawn away to St Thomas More of Blaydon – the most northerly team in the Durham County Cup!
The game proved to be a cracker, Hurworth raced out of the blocks and went 3-0 up after 10 minutes, just before half time St Thomas More pulled one back as they went into the break at 3-1. Hurworth again started well and looked to have killed the game going 4-1 up. However, St Thomas More seemed to be inspired by this and went on an outstanding spell, scoring 3 quickfire goals to make it 4-4 with around 15 minutes to play. The game seemed to be heading towards extra-time, however, with 3 minutes to play a long ball from Walker found its way to Johnson who flicked it over a defender and then volleyed it into the top corner from 20 yards to complete his hat trick, causing mass celebrations! Hurworth nervously pushed everyone back and just about seen out the final St Thomas More attack despite immense pressure.
The lads had plenty of time to celebrate as the journey back down the A1 took around 2 and a half hours!
Huge thanks to St Thomas More who were fantastic hosts and played some top football, the game was played in great spirit and both sets of lads were a credit to their school! A superb advert for schoolboy football. Good luck for the rest of the season.
Hurworth now face Longfield in a SWIFT Academies derby for a place in the County Cup Final next Tuesday (12th of March). Huge congrats to all the team who were outstanding, great desire and character from everyone!
