The MFL department currently offers the option to study Spanish, French and German at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
The study of a foreign language is an integral part of the Key Stage 3 curriculum at Hurworth and as such all pupils study a language from Year 7 to Year 9. In Year 7, all students study Spanish as their first language. Sets 1 -3 follow the Viva coursebooks and Spanish Studies is undertaken by other sets. Spanish Studies has been introduced to give students the opportunity to learn the essentials of the language via the study of the culture and traditions of the country. The aim is to boost language skills in both the target language and English literacy, whilst developing cultural awareness. This is built upon in Year 8 with French Students and in Year 9 with German Studies.
At the end of Year 7 pupils in sets 1 and 2 choose a second foreign language. They have the choice between French and German. They will continue to study two languages until they choose their options in Year 9.
At Hurworth, we are proud to offer all three languages at GCSE and the department has consistently impressive results with pupils often continuing their study at A Level. We wholeheartedly believe that the study of MFL plays a vital part in preparing students for future careers and we strive to create learning environments to develop linguistic competency and cultural awareness for all students.
Key Stage 3 Languages
In Key Stage 3 pupils study a range of topic areas such as personal identification, family life, school life, the media, free time, holidays, health, future plans and home and local area. Through these topic areas pupils develop their vocabulary range, pronunciation and grammatical awareness. Pupils also develop many other transferable skills which can be applied to other areas of the curriculum. Alongside the language content pupils study many cultural aspects which serve to broaden their horizons and challenge their views.
Pupils are assessed in all four skill areas. In Year 7 pupils in Sets 1-3 are allocated 3 hours of Spanish per fortnight and sets 4-5 are allocated 2 hours of Spanish Studies per fortnight. In Year 8 sets 1 and 2 continue with 3 hours of their first language alongside 3 hours of their second language. Set 3 pupils are allocated 3 hours of MFL per fortnight and sets 4-5 are allocated 2 hours of French Studies per fortnight. In Year 9 sets 1 and 2 study their first language for 3 hours per fortnight and their second language for 3 hours per fortnight. Set 3 is allocated 2 hours per fortnight of MFL and sets 4-5 are allocated 2 hours of German Studies per fortnight. Pupils can expect an Independent Learning task in line with whole-school policy.
The department is well-resourced with reference materials and audio-visual equipment to support pupils with their language learning and pupils are also encouraged to make use of the plentiful online resources available for learning a language (see useful links). The department also has a description to activlearn resources which is available to all year groups and classes.
