Commendations

FROM THE NCSL

“The NCSL is extremely interested in Hurworth's exciting work on Assertive Mentoring. Its success as a high performing school with an unrelenting focus on   raising standards of achievement for all, owes much to its Assertive Mentoring systems.”
Steve Munby, NCSL (March 2007)

PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE

Just thought I would let you know that Shirebrook achieved some fantastic results this year which moves us well above the National Challenge benchmark! Now that the assertive mentoring is well underway with the new Year 11 it is hoped that we will build upon this success even more so during the next year. Thank you again for all of your support with its introduction and I shall keep you up to date with how it is going!”
Tim Croft, Deputy Headteacher, Shirebrook School (September 2009)

Kingsthorpe College (Northampton) results 37% 5 A*-C inc Eng and Maths this year and 55% overall. Last was 16 and 38%. A version of the Hurworth scheme was used!! Thanks a lot!! I thought you would like to know. Please pass on to Eamon et al!”
Paul M (September 2009)

Just thought you’d like to know – results at Prestwich -5 A* - C increased by 10% this year to 65% and with English and Maths was also up 8%. I’m sure that your results were excellent. We’ve already started to mentor the next Year 11. I wanted to thank you for all your help and support – the Head sends his regards; he is very impressed with the outcomes. I hope you are well. Take care.”

“Dear Eamonn

I thought I'd give you a quick update as to our progress with the Assertive Mentoring at Cantonian.

I am absolutely delighted with our progress thus far - a comprehensive action plan that I am following to the letter, a very enthusiastic leading team, a team of very enthusiastic mentors who have all received thorough training and now also a very enthusiastic year 11. Parents are all delighted and the feedback at our year 11 parents' evening this week was quite overwhelming. Some of our toughest borderline pupils are responding unbelievably well and pupils are talking to each other about who their mentor is, the work they are have to do, the deals being struck and the after school lessons they go to. I really am quite amazed as to its impact - and not intending any disrepect to either you or Dean, it's not
rocket science!

On a personal note, I am embarking on the NPQH and Assertive Mentoring will now form the basis for my School Improvement Project.

Thank you again for what is probably the most transformational INSET I have taken part in.

Warm regards to both you and Dean.
E-Mail: Morwen Powell, Assistant Head Teacher, Cantonian High School, Cardiff (January 2009)

“Dear Eamonn

We are writing on behalf of the Northampton Area Improvement Partnership . We would like to thank you for your inspirational input into our Town Inset Day. This is the first time that we have held an event such as this and thanks to you and the other Keynote Speakers it was a resounding success.

The verbal feedback regarding your session particularly has been very positive and we are expecting to be calling you regarding dates for you to come and carry out your two day training with many of our schools in the town. It was wonderful to hear about your work that can be so easily related to individual children. We suspect people will already be thinking about which parts they can implement instantly ! Once again, thank you for taking the time to come to Northampton.”
Claire Beck, Northampton Partnership (February 2009)

“Attended 2 of your courses last year and thought I’d let you know we had some excellent results. In context 2005 – 2006 we achieved 24%. Our target for 2006 -2007 was 33% which was originally thought to be adventurous. We introduced the Assertive Mentoring programme (admittedly not as we would like to have done due to how far we were into the year) and we actually achieved 46% with our 5+ A* - C including English and Maths increasing by 100%. We are obviously over the moon.”
E-Mail: School in the Midlands (September 2007)

“I targeted 52 of our school's Year 11 students for the programme. 84.6% of these 52 students achieved 5+ A*-Cs. A further 12 real ‘outsiders’ were also included and 41.6% of these got through. Prior to Assertive Mentoring our school would have been delighted to have seen its 5+A*-C scores rise to 42% this year but to reach 48% from 36% last year is fantastic and exceeded our expectations. We are now extending the use of Assertive Mentoring throughout key stage 4 so that ALL pupils can benefit.”
E-mail: Senior Teacher from a school in the Midlands (September 2007)

“We got 36% A*- C (incl EM), up from 31% last year and 99% 1+ A* - G up from
96% last year. Although it may not seem it, there has been good progress and we have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. We also had Ofsted in May to see if we should be taken out of the category 'Notice to Improve'. I am
happy to say that they definitely felt we should be out of a category and gave us a satisfactory overall, but with elements of outstanding.”
M Taitt, August 2008

“Thanks to Assertive Mentoring our Local Authority 5+ A*-Cs GCSE average has shot up by 10% to 72% this year (2008).This improvement has been achieved in less than a year following inspirational training by Eamonn and Dean which enabled SLTs across Service Children's Education in Germany and Cyprus to use the Hurworth model to support raising standards . The Assertive Mentoring system works!”
Cynthia Symon, Secondary Strategy Consultant, Service Children's Education Directorate, Germany

“Well - the results are great, in fact, the best set since the last 4 years!!!! We are really really pleased. We were really concerned with our S4 before we started this, and we mentored 43 of them in total. 41 of them passed the school measures of 5+ at either General or Credit, and 22 of them passed at 5+ Credit (we doubled the number of kids getting 5+ Credits this year). This means that next year, our Higher results should also be transformed. This would not have happened if they hadn't been mentored. The really good thing as well is that we got a lot of positive publicity out of it too. We presented this info to staff on the first day back, and we now have an additional 15 people who want to become mentors.”
Jon Reid, Edinburgh (Aug 2008)

FROM THE CONFERENCES/SEMINARS

“I attended the AM "training day" in Birmingham recently and we've just completed our first round of tracking using the system you described. Fantastic. We are quite good with SIMS assessment manager and so we had it set up for colleagues to enter the data directly into there. As a result, by the end of the hour we had the information about all students' overall achievement without the need for a senior manager to do any copying and pasting the following day. We'd be happy to give you more details if that would help.We are delighted by what we've been able to learn, the painful thing is that we've got so much under achievement and the system makes that even more obvious. Now for the hard part! Thank you again.”
David Tansey, Sefton

“I went to the conference with 4 colleagues and we all thoroughly enjoyed it and took so much away from it. Dean and Eammonn were inspiring speakers and the assertive mentoring programme sounds very powerful. Despite the fact that we do not work just in one school but many across the county, we are going to be trying this out with our looked after children. Please thank all those concerned for a really interesting and enjoyable day. Kind regards.”
Paula, Looked After Children Education Support Worker, Salt Lane, Salisbury

“Without any doubt this has been the best in-service I have ever intended in 31 years.”

"Haughton School improved its results from 32% to 58% having implemented Assertive Mentoring in Year 11 in 2007-08. We’re delighted."

“Not sure if you remember me, but I visited your school last academic year with a view of using/adapting your assertive mentoring model. Tracking student progress was a key issue highlighted from our previous OFSTED which has given us Notice to Improve. I thought it important to let you know that we recently had a HMI preliminary visit and he has deemed us as making good progress in this area along with the LA review we recently had. Thanks so much for the help, support and ideas you gave me. This has helped us progress faster. I was able to implement strategies very efficiently bringing in the whole school.”

FROM A ‘TASTER SESSION’

“Great to meet up (with Eamonn) today – you have inspired me more than you will ever know!”

E-Mail: Senior Teacher in the North East (January 2008)

IN-SCHOOL SUPPORT

“Thank you for our training session with our mentors on 12th July. It was great. It went down really well with staff. They were very inspired and are keen to be involved so much so we now have 48 people interested in becoming mentors!”
E-Mail: Senior Teacher in North East (July 2007)

“Hurworth has been a brilliant role model for Laurence Jackson School (LJS) for the assertive mentoring programme. We have had excellent support and training and Eamonn has always been on hand for support and advice - an excellent and caring communicator. We have set up the programme for our Y11 students and feel that the ethos of the school is changing and hope that we can have a similar impact on our students, staff and parents as Hurworth has. A pleasure to work with such a forward thinking school!”
E-Mail: 2 AH’s at Laurence Jackson School (March 2008)

“The quality of training is excellent and is provided in a realistic way by people who actually "do the job"! The results speak for themselves and I am convinced that Assertive Mentoring will lead to big improvements in my own school. Our students are excited and keen to participate; parents and staff are equally enthusiastic and committed. All the training materials provided are first class in terms of quality and accessability. Eamonn and Dean are always ready to help, support and talk through any issues that may arise. Fantastic stuff!”
Senior Teacher in Bury (March 2008)

A VISIT TO HURWORTH

“The visit to Hurworth school was excellent. Speaking to the students gave me
some excellent tips and showed me how beneficial they thought the programme
was to them.”
