HARD LESSON
An insight into life for some of the world’s poorest children was devised at Hurworth School Maths and Computing College, where year seven pupils worked under ‘sweat shop’ conditions. They were required to draw as many bananas as possible to pre-arranged format in about 40 minutes with limited resources and under rigorous restrictions while being shouted at. The organiser was citizenship co-ordinator, Mrs Armes.
Teacher, Mrs Rees said: “The idea was for them to understand what it’s like for workers of their age in developing countries who produce clothes and other goods for poor wages.”

HAITI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL
Students at Hurworth School Maths ad Computing College held a non-uniform day last week, paying £1 not to wear school uniform. Events for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal, which raised £1000, included a cake stall, guess the number of sweets in a jar, a small change collection in the canteen raising £50, collecting with buckets and other activities. Three Year 7 students also organised a car wash in Middleton St George, raising £50.

BEAUTY PRINCESS NEEDS YOUR VOTE
A teenager who triumphed over thousands of hopefuls to make it through to the first round of a national beauty pageant is asking for people to vote for her. Amy-Claire Robson, from Darlington was asked to enter the Miss Teen Princess pageant after being spotted at the Clothes Show Live event, in Birmingham, in December.
The 13-year-old was selected from 9’500 girls to attend a photoshoot in London. She is now competing against 100 girls to be selected as one of two Miss Teen Princess finalists through a public vote. The pair will join other finalists at a live pageat this summer, where a winner will be chosen.
Amy-Claire, who attends Hurworth School Maths and Computing College, said: “I am really excited. Being picked has really boosted my confidence.”

SCHOOL ON THE BALL TO HELP HEART CHARITY
Pupils and staff went head-to-head in a tournament to raise money for a cause promoting healthy hearts. Students and staff from Hurworth School and Maths and Computing College took part in a dodgeball contest in aid of the British Heart Foundation, a charity nominated by school sports co-ordinator Mr. Garmston. Teams were charged £10 to enter and the event raised £250.
The tournament for years eight and nine was held on Friday, with the team Average Garmo the victors, while the staff triumphed over teams from years ten and eleven on Thursday. Year 11 student Serena Rana-Rahman, 16, who took part in the event, said: “The staff team were quite good - they were just giving it everything they had. It’s not part of our curriculum normally, but it was really fun.”

TOP GIRL
Sarah Parsons, a Year 11 student at Hurworth School Maths and Computing College, was recently awarded a medal for being Under-17 Woman Field Athlete of the Year at Middlesbrough (Mandale) Athletics Club.
Sarah’s events are the shot putt, discus and hammer. She trains at the club every Wednesday and at school last year she top Year 10 female athlete at Sports Day, winning the Victrix Ludorum prize.

DIANA AWARDS FOR ACTING AS SCHOOL MENTORS
Student mentors have been rewarded for helping younger pupils to settle into school life. A total of 28 year 11 pupils at Hurworth School Maths and Computing College have been awarded Diana Awards for their work as role models and counsellors.
The group has been getting to know and helping year seven pupils adjust to life in secondary school. Teacher, Mrs Rees said: “The group helped when year sevens came into school for a taster day.”
Since that time, they have been going into tutor time to help them settle into school. If younger pupils need to know their way around, or are worried about homework, or have a problem with bullying, they can talk to the year 11 students. They have done a marvelous job.”

RAFFLE CASH
Students from Years 9 and 10 at Hurworth School Maths and Computing College organised a Parent Teacher Association Selection Box raffle which raised £100 towards PTA funds. Sixty selection boxes were donated by parents and staff.
